Field trials 25 field trials are registered in Germany for 2006. They include trails with GM maize, potato, barley, and rapeseed, though trials with maize (insect-resistant and/or herbicide-tolerant) clearly dominate the list. Second is potatoes (modified metabolism). Since field trials must be notified only three days in advance, this list may expand during the course of the growing season.
Commercial cultivation For the 2006 growing season, 141 commercial plantings were registered in Germany. Some of the intended plantings were later withdrawn. With the exception of two plantings with maize T25, all commercial GMO plantings in Germany are of the maize line MON 810. The total area planted with GM maize in 2006 amounts to 700 to 900 hectares, or 0.5 percent of Germany’s maize production. Half of the GM maize grown in Germany is in the state of Brandenburg, while only 1.6 percent is found in the former West Germany.
