Field trials Only three field trials with genetically modified plants have ever been conducted in Austria, which took place in 1996 and 1997. Two trials looked at potatoes with a modified carbohydrate metabolism, and the third experiment studied herbicide tolerant maize. Commercial cultivation Citing safety concerns, the Austrian government placed a moratorium on cultivating the EU-authorised maize lines Bt176, MON810, and T25. Austria recently added rapeseed line GT73 to the list, making commercial production of GMOs in Austria very unlikely over the next few years.
