Rapeseed MS8 x RF3 x GT73

Trait: These rapeseed lines were developed to provide a pollination control system for the production of hybrid oilseed rape expressing male sterility and tolerance to glyphosat and glufosinate-containing herbicides (Roundup®, Basta®, Rely®, Finale®, and Liberty®)
Inserted genes in MS8
barnase-genesource: Bacillus amyloliquefaciens

function: male sterility; the barnase gene encodes for a ribonuclease enzyme (RNAse). The RNAse interferes RNA production in specific cells of the pollen sac, thus disrupting their normal cell functioning and preventing the development of pollen.

bar-genesource: soil fungi (Streptomyces hygroscopius)

function: the bar gene codes for the enzyme Phosphinothricin-Acetyltransferase (PAT) and leads to increased tolerance to glufosinate-containing herbicides.

Inserted genes in RF3
barstar-genesource: Bacillus amyloliquefaciens

function: restoring fertility; transgenic RF3 plants contain the barstar gene to restore fertility in the hybrid line. The gene codes for a ribonuclease inhibitor (barstar), which specifically inhibits the barnase expressed by the MS8 line.

As a result, when pollen from the restorer line RF3 is crossed to the male sterile line MS8, the resultant progeny are able to develop normal anthers and pollen.

bar-genesource: soil fungi (Streptomyces hygroscopius)

function: the bar gene codes for the enzyme Phosphinothricin-Acetyltransferase (PAT) and leads to increased tolerance to glufosinate-containing herbicides.

Inserted genes in GT73:
cp4 epsps-gene

source: soil bacterium Agrobacterium ssp. strain CP4.

funktion: Through the change of one amino acid the plants are tolerant to glyphosate.

gox-gene

source: soil bacterium (Ochrobactrum anthropi)

function: Glyphosate oxidase (GOX) enzyme accelerates the normal breakdown of the herbicide glyphosate into two non-toxic compounds, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) and glyoxylate.

Methods for the genetic modification: Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated gene transfer.
