Maize T25

Summary of risk assessment

Opinion of the former Scientific Commitee on Plants (SCP)
Adopted 10/02/1998
Conclusion T25 maize is as safe as conventional maize, and releasing T25 for processing and food and feed use is unlikely to cause adverse effects on human health and the environment.

Safety of food and feed
New proteins
(PAT, BLA)
Feeding experiments on rats: No reports of acute toxicity.

Comparison with known toxic substances: No correspondence.

Assessment for food and feed Feeding studies: Studies of milk and eggs did not report negative effects.

Enviromental safety
Survivability Maize is highly domesticated and is not viable outside of cultivation.
Out-crossing Maize has no cross-compatible wild relatives in Europe. Out-crossing is only possible with maize in neighbouring fields.
Non-target organisms Field trials show no risks to birds or other non-target species.

Risks to soil microorganisms and groundwater due to decomposition of plant material are considered extremely low.
