Transgene

A gene taken from one organism and transferred into another by genetic engineering

Transgenes are isolated and transferred from organism to organism by genetic engineering. This allows the transfer of genes regardless of reproductive barriers. 

The adjective "transgenic" is often used to describe genetically modified plants, animals and microorganisms: a transgenic plant is a plant possessing a gene transmitted by genetic engineering.
