Integration of a DNA fragment into a chromosome

This can be done with the help of enzymes that cleave the DNA strand and integrate the DNA fragment at the open ends. It is the converse of “transient expression” in which a gene temporarily exists alongside the genome, but is not integrated and is eventually degraded by enzymes in the cell (DNases).
