DNA tool used in genetic engineering to harbour genes of interest

Vectors are circular strands of DNA (plasmids) generally obtained from bacterial or viral sources that are commonly used in genetic engineering. Genes of interest can be integrated into a vector and introduced into bacteria or other organisms. Vectors have all of the genetic information needed for them to be replicated and utilised in various types of cells.

A plasmid from Agrobacterium tumefaciens (Ti-plasmid) is often used as a vector for plant genetic transformation.
