Xenotransplantation

Transplantation of cells, tissue, and organs between non-related species

The need for donor organs is much higher than the supply. Xenotransplantation is said to be the solution - for example, the transfer of organs from animals to humans.

Early experiments attempted to transfer organs from apes to humans. Today, pigs are considered the best candidates. Human and pig organs are very similar in size, anatomy, and physiology. Nonetheless, xenotransplantation is a long way from routine procedure in hospitals.
