Perspectives |
At present no cultivation of GM wheat. It is possible that
it may enter the market in the medium term. |
Cultivation
Wheat, together with maize and rice is the most widely cultivated
cereal in the world. In 2005, ca. 600 million tons of wheat were
produced. It is grown on all the continents. Important producing
countries are China, India, the USA, Russia, Australia and Argentina.
Utilisation
In particular, soft wheat (Triticum
aestivum) is widely grown.
After the harvest the cereal is ground and
used in foodstuffs:
and as animal feed.
Energy crops and renewable primary products:
- bioethanol, heat production
- starch from wheat grain is used in various industrial processes,
e.g. in the paper industry

Agronomic traits
Weed control
Resistance against pathogens
-
fungal
resistance, in particular against infections with fusarium or
mildew. Infestation of plants with these fungi can lead to contamination
of the wheat products with strong toxins ( mycotoxins).
Resistance against smut fungi (Ustilaginomycetes; loose smut,
stinking smut).
-
virus resistance

Several applications for field trials have been made in
Germany and Switzerland in which from 2008 various GM wheat lines
with resistance against fungi (mildew, smut) are to be tested. |

The agrobiotech concern Monsanto has for the present suspended plans to
market GM wheat with herbicide tolerance (RoundupReady). In May 2004,
the approval application that had been submitted 2 years previously in
the USA and Canada was withdrawn. Many North American farmers had feared
a reduction in the wheat exports to Europe and Asia if cultivation of GM
wheat took place. |

countries |
Applications have also been withdrawn in other countries such as South
Africa. |
