Agriculture

The most important producers for zucchinis (Cucurbita pepo) are China, India, Ukraine, the USA, and Egypt. In Europe, zucchinis are mainly grown in Italy and Spain. Harvests are often reduced through pathogens such as virus.

 

Utilisation

Zucchinis are termed Zucchetti in Switzerland and summer squash in the USA.

This species of pumpkin is particularly tasty if harvested while still unripe at a size of 10–20 cm. Zucchinis are consumed as:

  • Virus resistance: In the USA two GM-squash (zucchini) species are approved for cultivation and as foodstuff. These have two or three envelop protein genes as protection against virus attack.
