Perspectives A commercial use of GM-plums is being targeted in the USA.

 

Agriculture

Plums are grown worldwide in regions with a warm-moderate climate, but mainly in Asia and Europe. In 2005, almost half of the world's harvest of around 9.8 tons came from China. After China, the main EU producers are Serbia-Montenegro and Germany. Cultivation of plum is also important in Romania, the USA, France and Chile.

 

Utilisation

The fruit is consumed raw or is processed to:

  • Juice and alcoholic drinks (wine, schnapps, liquor)
  • Fruit products
  • Tinned or dry fruit
