Linseed oil

Explanatory Note

Linseed oil is pressed from flaxseed or linseed. Linseed oil contains a high amount linolenic acid (omega-3-fatty acid) that is linked to different health-promoting effects (lowering of cholesterol level, prevention of cardiovascular disease).

Application

  • Primarily: cooking oil
  • Additionally: for the production of paint and varnishes, as well as linoleum

Gene technology

Raw material flax: Herbicide-tolerant, genetically modified flax has been approved in Canada, but is not yet cultivated. The import of GM flaxseed or linseed, as well as the food produced thereof and food ingredients are a regulated product in the EU. To date, there are no available applications.

Labelling: Linseed oil from GM flax is subject to a labelling requirement.
