Peanut puffs

Possible application of gene technology Declaration
Primary product GM-maize yes

Description of product

Peanut puffs are yellow-brown, slightly curved, light snacks made from maize flour with a peanut taste. Maize flour is compressed under high pressure in a machine and then pressed out at high speed. The flour expands through the sudden decrease in pressure and gains a porous structure. These maize puffs are baked in fat and finally rolled in peanut sauce.

Possible application of gene technology

Applications of gene technology are possible in the following ingredients that commonly are found in peanut puffs. However, the extent to which a particular product is affected by these possibilities cannot be stated with certainty:

  • raw materials: maize, maize flour / ground maize (polenta)
Maize can contain a certain percentage of GM-maize, especially when the primary product has been imported from the USA or Argentina. This probability will rise if cultivation of GM-maize increases in the EU.
In Europe, GM-maize is cultivated on comparatively small areas. Furthermore, it is possible that occasional, non-intentional admixing with GM-maize can occur. In general, however, this percentage remains below the current allowed limit (0.9%) that requires declaration.
  • flavour enhancer: glutamate, seasoning orflavouring based on edible
  • emulsifying agents, e.g. mono- and diglycerides
  • plant oils
