Infant Formula and Baby Food

Description of product

Two types of food typically are fed to infants:

• Infant formula (0-1 year): breast milk substitute; milk-based
• Baby food (4 months - 1 year): foods besides breast milk and infant formula; juices, fruit, and vegetable products

The production of baby food is strictly regulated. EC guidelines dictate minimum and maximum levels for fats, protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and trace elements in baby food.

Given the multitude of baby food products, it is impossible to provide general examples of uses of gene technology.

Possible application of gene technology

Applications of gene technology are possible in the following ingredients that commonly are found in infant formula and baby food. However, the extent to which a particular product is affected by these possibilities cannot be stated with certainty:

• vitamins, additives
• vegetable oilsand fats
• milk protein orwhey protein, soy protein or plant protein product
• maltodextrin
