Stakeholder input wanted: survey on research needs for assessing GMO impacts 

Shaping the Future of GMO Research

Stakeholder with interests in the risk and/or benefit assessment of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s) are invited to take part in an online survey.

The aim of this survey is to identify which research needs should be prioritised, thereby contributing to the commissioning of research on the health, environment and economic impacts of GMOs.

The survey will close on 15th July 2015.

GM plants in the EU in 2013
Green gene technology in the European Union: Spain, Portugal and hardly anything else

Like the total cultivation of maize in Spain, the areas farmed with GM varieties increased 2012 and also 2013: They rose every year by about 20.000 hectares to now 137.000 hectares and so they correspond with a 30 percent share of the Spanish maize production. There was noticeable growth for Bt maize in Castilian-La Mancha, Extremadura und Andalusia – regions in which the insect pressure was particularly high due to the European corn borer. In Catalonia 90 percent of the cultivation account for Bt maize by now. In Portugal the Bt maize area increased to 9.300 hectares 2012 but dropped again afterwards by 12 percent to 8.100 hectares. Some of the reasons put forward are the mild pest infestation 2012 and the strict conditions for coexistence.

In the Czech Republic the cultivation of MON810 maize remains also at a low level. Smaller field trials take place in Romania and Slovakia. Although the trade with MON810 seeds was prohibited in Poland, they were imported from neighbouring countries and cultivated on an area with 4.000 hectares in 2012. Since 2013, the cultivation of MON810 maize is also prohibited in Poland.

National cultivation bans for genetically modified maize imposed by governments in 2008 or 2009 are still in place in Germany and France. Both countries have suspended the approval issued according to EU law. In 2007, French farmers grew Bt maize on approximately 21.000 hectares. In Germany in 2008 GM maize was cultivated on an area of over 3.000 hectares. Also in Austria, Greece, Luxembourg and Hungary, the cultivation remains prohibited.

Therefore, the GRACE project will establish new tools for assessing the quality of existing studies and will conduct comprehensive reviews to identify health, environmental and socio-economic impacts of GM plants.
